Healthcare
Quality healthcare is essential to a community's survival. More than 100 physicians practice medicine here, including primary care as well as many specialties, and the area is served by two well-equipped hospitals.
Hospitals
St. Margaret's Health operates a 92-bed acute-care facility in Spring Valley, featuring a newly renovated 52-bed medical/surgical unit, a 6-bed ICU, a Level II nursery with 6 labor/delivery/recovery rooms and a skilled nursing facility. The hospital also offers specialty care, including Comprehensive Rehab Services, Same-Day Surgery, Cardiopulmonary Services and Hospice. Diagnostics are state of the art and include an open MRI and Gated-SPECT Nuclear Medicine, among others. St. Margaret's Midtown Health Center in Peru features walk-in care, digital X-ray and expanded laboratory services.
The Illinois Valley Community Hospital, a 72-bed general medical and surgical hospital, is based in Peru. The IVCH Center for Physical Rehabilitation and Acquatics, located at the Illinois Valley YMCA, is regarded as one of the best rehab facilities in northern Illinois, and the hospital's Women's Health Center has a staff of three OB/GYNs and three nurse midwives. IVCH also operates FastCare, a walk-in retail clinic housed within the Peru Wal-Mart.
Both hospitals are part of a group partnering to create the new Valley Regional Cancer Center, which will provide comprehensive care to area cancer patients.
Care for Veterans
Veterans receive nursing care that Illinois Veterans' Home at LaSalle, which opened in 1990. The facility was expanded in 2009 and now can serve 160 Veterans needing skilled nursing care and 40 Veterans suffering from Alzheimer's disease or related dementia. Ancillary services, such as physical, speech and occupational therapies are available at the home through specialists in the community.
Additional Medical Services
Uninsured, underinsured and low-income residents of the area are also served by The Hygienic Institute, a non-for-profit agency founded by a local resident in 1941 and affiliated with IVCH.
North Central Behavioral Health Systems provides area residents of all ages with outpatient services for both mental health and substance abuse.
There are four nursing homes in the area, as well as assisted-care facilities and home health agencies that help meet personalized care and medical needs.
